What is Missile Boring ?

Missile boring (also known as horizontal boring, underground pneumatic boring, or impact boring) is a method of point-to-point horizontal underground boring. For years, missile boring has been utilized as a standard for installation of public utilities. Missile boring is considered an invaluable trenchless technology solution in numerous applications and installations, including:

  • Water Utilities
  • Gas Utilities
  • Electrical Conduit
  • Phone / Cable Lines
  • Irrigation / Sprinkler Systems
  • Outdoor Lighting / Landscaping
  • Security Systems
  • Electrical Gate Systems
  • Auxiliary Home Power Lines

The crews at Line Tec utilize boring equipment that allows for completion of various types of jobs. We are able to bore from 0.5 – 3.0″ in order to install conduit, casings, and sleeves for underground utilities and other applications. Our method of pneumatic missile boring is perfect for compact work sites and completely eliminates the need for a large, cumbersome, and costly directional boring or drilling rig in most cases.

Why Missile Boring ?

We know you love saving money as much as the next guy, and we don’t blame you! It’s important to choose the best, most cost-effective solution for your job. Take the money you save and buy a drink on us (don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone).
We all know the saying: “time is money”. Unfortunately, our alarm clocks don’t greet us every morning by throwing $100s all over the place. Fortunately, you’ve found the next best thing. Stop wasting time and start saving money. It’s a no-brainer.
Our methods are minimally disruptive and let’s be honest here, does South Florida traffic need to be any worse? Avoiding threats and accidents while driving a car is hard enough, but try blocking Mrs. Smith’s driveway with a directional rig and see how far you get. We’ll be awaiting your call.
As Marvin Gaye taught us in ’67, “Ain’t nothing like the real thing, baby”. Though he may not have been a contractor, he was definitely on to something. There’s simply no excuse for cutting up or sawing through a roadway, driveway, or parking lot. Restoration work and patching is expensive. Don’t even get us started on the pavers you just pulled up from Mrs. Smith’s driveway!
We care about the environment and you should, too. We do our best to take care of this giant rock (known commonly as “Earth”). Without it, we wouldn’t have anything to bore through.

Missile Boring: The Steps

Utility Locating

For safety purposes, line locates must be performed and marked for any underground work.

We Are Responsible

While we may cut PVC and our customers’ costs, we definitely don’t cut corners. Doing things properly keeps our crews safe and efficient.

Operator Surveying

Our crew surveys the area and the obstacles present in order to determine the best path for the missile.

We Are Experienced

Our crewmen scope out the area with hawk-like precision. Our expertise and dedication to perfection allow us to keep your palms and petunias positively pristine.

Missile Aiming

A hole is dug at each end of the bore. The operator aligns the missile in the starting pit so it reaches the exit pit.

We Are Accurate

As Wyatt Earp once said, “Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything.” We tend to agree. Our mission is to get the mole to the hole while saving time and money in the process.

Property Restoring

Once the bore is complete, the sleeve or conduit is placed. We inspect the area and leave it the way we found it.

We Are Meticulous

We’re good at making sure your property looks as great as it did when we got there. Maybe too good. Wait…have the guys from Line-Tec even been here? Trust us, we have.

Missile Boring: The Value

Some obstacles are unavoidable when using traditional plowing or trenching methods. In these instances, a missile bore is a viable option to get the job done quickly and inexpensively. Some such obstacles are:

  • Roadways / Driveways
  • Parking Lots
  • Sidewalks
  • Buildings
  • Existing Landscaping

Even if there isn’t a clear obstruction, missile boring can save both time and money. Of course if it was up to us, everyone would always choose missile boring. Still, we’re pretty certain we can save you some money. Give us a call and we’ll be happy to prove it!

Missile Boring vs. Directional Boring: What’s the Difference ?

Missile boring is a lower cost alternative to directional boring (also known as horizontal directional drilling or slant drilling). While directional boring serves a similar purpose, it is more suited for lengthy, wide-diameter installations in a variety of soil conditions. Directional boring is a more practical solution when an installation must go through solid rock or sedimentary material. Missile boring is a viable alternative to directional boring or drilling in many instances, but especially for jobs in crowded areas where a work site cannot accommodate a directional rig. Missile boring also has other advantages when compared to directional boring, including:

  • Lower Cost
  • Minimal Disruption to Residents
  • Minimal Disruption to Ground Surface
  • Eliminates Need for / Cost of Restoration

Though missile boring is often a better alternative to directional boring, there are a few limitations. Typically, the distance of a missile bore is limited by the length of the hose which supplies the tool with air. Our easy solution to this limitation is to perform longer bores in increments. The possibility of utilizing a missile bore for installations also relies upon soil conditions. While most of the soil in South Florida allows for bores free of complications, it isn’t possible to reliably bore through extremely rocky soil, coquina rock, coral, or sugar sand.
